Derry Airport,
City of Derry Airport or Derry Airport as the locals know it by, is located approximately seven miles from the city’s center on the A2 Coleraine to Derry Road and can be easily found following the road signs on all of the major roads around Londonderry. The airport began in World War II as one of the many airfields that were needed for the war. It stayed as a military airfield into the 1950’s before starting limited commercial flights when the government gave the land and facilities back to the city, Derry city airport now transports around 500,000 passengers per year to UK Ireland and Europe.
PARKING
Be warned vehicles and their contents are left at their owners risk Parking at City of Derry Airport has two car parks located next to the terminal. They are monitored 24 hours a day and are open for most of the day and into the night. The car parks run on the Pay-on-foot system which means you pay for your parking stay in the terminal before you leave the airport. There are designated parking bays for handicapped passengers with two hours free parking. After that the normal parking prices apply. Remember parking charges must be paid for before exiting the main building and cannot be paid at the exit barrier from the car park. Public Transport Derry Airport
There are buses that run from Derry city center to the airport and into the surrounding areas. The bus system is very good and you can almost get to or from anywhere in N. Ireland by bus. The airport has no train station, but there are shuttle buses that arevery efficient and can take you to or from the airport. The taxi companies in City of Derry are plentiful and they can get you all around the city. taxi ranks are outside the small terminal on your arrival. You also have a choice of Derry car hire, and airport car hire, companies in the arrivals terminal.
Shops, Bars and Restaurants
The airport has five retail and catering outlets - two in the main concourse and two in the Departures Area. The catering and retail concessions are operated by Mount Charles Catering Ltd, one of Northern Ireland's leading catering companies with outlets all over the country. Satin Silver operates the Jewellery Concession in the Departures Area. You can find food and drink in the airport that is suitable for most tastes.
